Our research shows that ideological differences between liberal and conservative students are a major factor in the conflict around speech and inclusion on college campuses. This highlights the need for solutions that focus on shared values to improve campus culture and discourse.
In our study of over 2,600 students, we found that 94% believe in the importance of listening to opposing views, but 45% are afraid to share their perspectives for fear of offending peers. Additionally, 1 in 4 students are regularly offended by others' opinions, and 1 in 5 have personally called out or "canceled" others.
